Two vehicle crash on US 35 injures two

On Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at approximately 2:05 PM, Cass County Central Dispatch received a report of a vehicle crash with entrapment on US 35 south of Delaware Road. Several deputies from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded, along with the Logansport Police Department, Cass County Emergency Management Agency, Cass County Fire District 1, Logansport Fire Department, and Cass County Emergency Medical Services. An initial scene assessment revealed a two-vehicle crash that blocked US 35.

Preliminary investigation by Sergeant Pat Zeider found that 77-year-old Gene Myers of rural Kokomo, IN, was driving a 2017 Ram pickup truck southbound on US35 when the trailer he was pulling began to sway and ultimately jackknifed. The Case tractor and backhoe loaded on the tandem-axle trailer became partially detached and struck a northbound 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe. The Hyundai was driven by 63-year-old Ruth VanMeter of Lakewood, CO.

Ruth VanMeter sustained serious injuries and was flown to a trauma center in Fort Wayne by a medical helicopter. A passenger in the Hyundai, 54-year-old David Sanders of Aurora, CO, was transported to Parkview Logansport by Cass County Emergency Medical Services for non-life-threatening injuries. Gene Myers and his passenger, Diana Myers, refused treatment at the scene.

US 35 was closed for approximately 1.5 hours to conduct the crash investigation and remove the vehicles.

The investigation is ongoing, and alcohol is not considered a factor in this crash. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 574-753-7800.
