Bessie “Marie” Mays

mays Bessie “Marie” Mays, 94, Peru, formerly of Onward, passed away at 6:46 a.m. Thursday, July 16, 2015, in St. Vincent Hospital, Kokomo.

Born April 1, 1921, in Hoover, Indiana (Cass County), she was the daughter of the late Roy K. and Mary Hester (Bloomer) Huddleston.

On June 28, 1941, in Peru, IN, she was married to Charles R.  “Chuck” Mays, who survives.

Marie was a 1939 graduate of Peru High School.  In 1984, she retired from the United States Postal Service where she had worked in Onward.

A devoted member of the Onward Christian Church, Marie was active in the afternoon circle.  She was also an auxiliary member of the Onward Volunteer Fire Department.  Most people remember her as the “iced tea lady” at all thevarious dinners held in Onward.

Surviving with her husband of 74 years are two sons: Charles Allen Mays (wife: Lisa)of  Walton, New York, and Gary Lynn Mays (wife: Sharon) of Peru; five grandchildren, Douglas, Dyanna, Danielle, Brian and Tonya Mays; three great-grandchildren, Amber Shotts, Adrienne R (Rush) Duepner and Andrew T Rush; two great-great-grandchildren, Dylan Marie Duepner and Ty Joseph Duepner; and two sisters, Margaret (Marvin) Burkhardt and Mae (Paul) Brackeneimer.

She was preceded in death by siblings Esther (Carl) Schini, Irene (James) Hollarman, Anna (Gaylord) Musselman,  Jason Huddleston, Lewis Huddleston, Howard Huddleston and Leonard Huddleston.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 24, 2015, in the Onward Christian Church with Pastor Rod Mason officiating.

Friends may call 1 hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Burial, at a later date, will be in the Mays Cemetery, Onward.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Onward Christian Church.
