Betty E. Murphy

murphyBetty E. Murphy, 93 of St. Louis, MO; formerly of Logansport, passed away Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at Manor Grove in St. Louis.

Born October 14, 1922 in Logansport, her parents were James A. and Bessie (Taylor) Mow. She was married to Robert E. Murphy on July 27, 1945 in the Wheatland Avenue United Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on October 17, 2003.

A 1940 graduate of Logansport High School, she worked at Farmer’s & Merchant’s State Bank and at the Prudential District office in Logansport. She was later employed for seven years in the office of Dr. Howard Carbaugh.

During World War II, Betty served in the local hospitals as a Red Cross Volunteer Nurse’s Aid and later as a Gray Lady Volunteer.

Betty was a lifetime member of Wheatland Avenue United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School and was active in the Women’s Study Club Association #5.  She was on the original YWCA board at the time plans were being made for the current YMCA facility and she later served on the board of the Children’s Home.

Surviving are three daughters, Janet Deetz, Kirkwood, MO; Carol (Rod) Huff, Mountain City, TN; Narda Parker, Orlando, FL; five grandchildren, Carl (Kathleen) Deetz, St. Louis, MO; Troy Huff, Boone, NC; Ingrid (Ryan) McMurray, St. Louis, MO; Elena (David) Knollinger, Kissimmee, FL; Trent (Amena) Huff, Sanford, FL; seven great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 21, 2015 in the Gundrum Funeral Home with Pastor Carolyn DeWitt officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Logansport.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Friday, November 20, also in the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Wheatland Avenue United Methodist Church.
