Royal Center, Indiana — Pioneer Elementary School’s second-grade students started the new school year with hands-on learning experiences designed to build STEM skills, encourage teamwork, and spark curiosity.

During the first week of school, students participated in engaging activities that allowed them to explore scientific concepts while working collaboratively with their classmates.

Mrs. Spark’s second-grade class conducted a lemon volcano experiment, giving students the opportunity to explore what happens when an acid reacts with baking soda. Through the hands-on activity, students observed a chemical reaction firsthand while developing their ability to make observations, ask questions, and draw conclusions.

In another classroom, Mrs. Center’s students participated in a team-building bridge challenge. Working in teams and using only the supplies provided, students were challenged to design and construct a bridge. The activity encouraged students to communicate, share ideas, solve problems, and work together toward a common goal.

“These types of hands-on experiences provide students with opportunities to apply what they are learning in meaningful ways,” said Dr. Charles Grable, Superintendent of Pioneer Regional School Corporation. “Our teachers do an excellent job creating engaging learning experiences that develop not only academic skills, but also collaboration, communication, creativity, and problem-solving.”

The activities are part of Pioneer Elementary’s continued emphasis on providing students with meaningful learning experiences that encourage them to learn, grow, and thrive.
