Logansport Community School Corporation teachers may be nominated for a new city honor that will be presented annually.
Mayor Dave Kitchell has announced the creation of the Margaret Newby Education Awards. The awards will recognize an outstanding LCSC teacher annually, as well as a retired teacher or administrator for career contributions to education and the community. Additionally, a student essay competition for elementary, middle and high school students will be part of the awards.
Teacher nominations will be accepted via mail at the Mayor’s Office and via e-mail through May 15. The essays may be submitted by May 20. Award recipients and essay contest winners will be announced during the final week of the school year.
The awards are named for the late Margaret Newby, who spent much of her career at Longfellow Elementary School. Newby also assumed various coaching capacities during World War II and won city elementary titles in football, basketball and baseball.
“During our bicentennial year in Indiana, it’s important to note the contributions of fourth-grade teachers like Margaret Newby who imparted Indiana history not just because they were required to by state guidelines, but because it was their passion to teach students about their heritage,” Kitchell said. “Margaret certainly fit that mold and was well-known among local teachers.”
Newby’s students annually made their own relief maps of Indiana. One of her classes crafted an entire state map with icons for various Indiana cities. It was eventually contributed to the Cass County Historical Society when she retired.
Criterion for the essay contests will be made available to local schools this week. An awards ceremony is expected to be held later this year.
Nominations may be sent to the Mayor’s Office, Room 201, City Building, 601 E. Broadway, Logansport, IN 46947, or to the mayor at email@example.com.
