Mary (Panagon) Johnston

johnsonmaryobitophotoMary (Panagon) Johnston, 95, passed away on Thursday, October 13, 2016, with her daughter and grandchildren at her bedside.

She was born on October 12, 1921 in Logansport, daughter of Greek immigrants, Evangelos & Erifili (Demopoulos) Panagon.

Mary graduated from Logansport High School in 1940, where she was hand-chosen by  Malcolm Raub to be in the first work-study program at Farmers & Merchants State Bank.  There, she met her mate of 60 years, Hollis F. Johnston, whom she married on August 17, 1947.  Hollis preceded her in death on August 9, 2007.

Mary was baptized into the Greek Orthodox Church as a young child and later, when  married, joined the Baptist Temple in Logansport.  She sang in the church choir and  was a member of the Mother’s Study Club, as well as various boards and committees. She was a former member of Psi Iota Xi Sorority and Rotary Anns.

She had also been a part-time assistant to the principal at Daniel Webster School where she was also an active member of the PTA.

Mary was a loving daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother.

Surviving are two daughters, Diana Geisler, Logansport, and Mary Martha Johnston,  Indianapolis; sister, Artemis Hoke, South Bend; six grandchildren, Aaron Mohler, Hollis (Chip) Geisler and wife, Heather, Alyssa Geisler & Justin Geisler, all of Logansport, Richard Geisler, Daleville, and Christina Geisler, Burton, Mich.; three great-grandchildren, Carly, Benjamin & Alex Geisler, Logansport; and nieces, Helen (Peter) Laskaris & Marian (Scott) Whitaker; and nephew, Nicholas (Anna) Efthimiou, LaGrange, and their families.

Preceding Mary in death were son-in-law, Richard (Dick) Geisler, and brother-in-law, Charles Hoke.

The visitation will be from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m., on Thursday, October 27, 2016, at Kroeger Funeral Home, followed by the service at 2:00 p.m., with Fr. George D. Konstantopoulos, of St. Andrews Greek Orthodox Church in South Bend, officiating.

Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
