Mark Joseph Karmel

Mark Joseph Karmel, 46, of Galveston passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at St. Vincent Hospital in Kokomo.

Mark was born on December 1, 1970 in Toledo, Ohio to Joseph and Carol (Mertzke) Karmel. On July 31, 2005 in Valparaiso, Indiana he married Melanie C. Peda who survives.

Mark was a 1989 graduate of St. Francis High School. He then graduated from the University of Toledo with his Bachelor’s Degree in education. He earned his Master’s Degree in Administration from Indiana Wesleyan University. Mark was a language arts teacher a Columbia Middle School. He was also formerly a principal at Lewis Cass High School and a language arts teacher at Portage High School.  He was also a member of the Geek Squad for Best Buy, and sold fireworks for Outlaw Fireworks. Mark was a member of All Saints Catholic Church and the Indiana Teachers Association.

Mark was an avid gamer and reader. He was a super hero, Star Wars, and comic book enthusiast. Anyone who met Mark was touched by his positive attitude and outlook on life. He always offered to help anyone he ever met.

Surviving along with his wife, Melanie, are two daughters; Marisol and Madeline Karmel, both of Galveston; mother, Carol Karmel, Kokomo; sister, Julie (Lee) Campbell, Deerfield, WI; step mother, Julia Larrick, Sylvania, OH; and two nieces.

A celebration of life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 21, 2017 in the All Saints Catholic Church with Fr. Dominic Petan Officiating.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 20 in the Gundrum Funeral Home.

A Rosary Service will be held at 7:00 PM on Friday.

Memorials may be made to the Lewis Cass Band or Athletic Funds.
