A local resident who will become an American citizen this week is this week’s Logansport Citizen of the Week.

Rosa Reynolds, a native of Mexico, will take the oath of citizenship Tuesday in Indianapolis. She attends The Bridge congregation in Logansport.

Mayor Dave Kitchell said becoming an American citizen is a lengthy process that takes significant commitment that he says is not celebrated enough in this country.

“We are a nation of immigrants, but at a time when so much attention and media coverage is committed to the negatives associated with the immigration issue, we can’t fail to acknowledge and applaud those from other countries who embrace the United States as the country on the longest journey in democracy the world has ever known,” Kitchell said. “If we’re going to keep this journey going for future generations, we have to show our support for the process made possible by manifest destiny.”

The mayor said people in Cass County, including the local literacy volunteer organization for which he formerly served as a board member, play an integral role in supporting those who want to call themselves Americans.  Literacy volunteers have allowed many adult residents to learn to speak English. Many faith communities and individuals also have been willing to lend a hand to those who have become naturalized citizens.

“To say that someone wants to become a citizen of your country is a real compliment to what we stand for and the veterans who have defended us,” Kitchell said.

Reynolds will receive a certificate from the Mayor’s Office and a gift certificate to a Logansport restaurant.

The Citizen of the Week recognizes Logansport residents, natives and former residents for their achievements and contributions.
