Dr. Horace D. Smith

Dr. Horace D. Smith, 72, of Logansport, passed away Saturday, January 2, 2021 at Memorial Hospital in Logansport.

Horace was born on February 11, 1948 in Norfolk Virginia and was the son of Horace D. Smith Sr. and Margie (Dameron) Smith but was lovingly raised by Margie and Charles Prouse. On August 21, 1976 in Gary, Indiana he married Linda Sorenson who survives.

Horace graduated from Frankfort Wesleyan High School, he then received his bachelor’s degree from Frankfort Pilgrim College, master’s degree from Olivet Nazarene University, and his Doctorate from Trinity Theological Seminary.

Horace began pastoring in the Gary, Indiana area before becoming the Pastor at the First Church of the Nazarene in Logansport where he served for 37 years. He also filled the pulpit at several area churches. While in the Cass County community, he served as the treasurer for the Fellowship of Cass County Clergy, he was a former chaplain for the Logansport Police Department and Cass County Jail. In his free time, Horace enjoyed bicycling, gardening, spending time around the fire while camping and substitute teaching for the Logansport School Corporation.

Surviving along with his wife Linda, are two sons, Jeffrey Smith of Logansport, and Mark Barthalow; grandson, Luke A. Smith, Logansport; sister, Wanda (Joe) Dinger of Bringhurst; brother, Charles (Tonya) Prouse of Logansport; brother-in-law, Alan Sorenson of Logansport; several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at the First Church of the Nazarene in Logansport with Pastor Jeff Allen and Pastor Dean Snyder officiating. Burial will follow at Paint Creek Cemetery near Camden.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Wednesday, also in the Church.

Memorials may be made to the First Church of the Nazarene or the Helm Street Church of God.
