James Gwin

James Dwight Gwin, honored and decorated Korean War hero, went to be with Jesus on Saturday, April 24th. He was in his home surrounded by family. It’s a great comfort to his family to know he has received the ultimate healing and that he knew Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. Jim was married on December 3, 1966, to Lois Hathaway-Boyd.

Born on October 13, 1928, to Thelma Kathleen Marshall and Alpha Gwin, Jr. Jim and his sister, Joanne, were raised on a farm in Metea, Indiana where he graduated in 1945 from Metea High School. After graduation, Jim joined the Army and served in active duty in the Korean War where he was decorated for heroism earning a Silver Star, Purple Heart and was recognized by the President of the United States and General Matthew R. Ridgeway. His commendations were for distinguished gallantry during war. According to Lieutenant Colonel Basmas of the 2nd infantry division, “Jim was an inspiration to all who witnessed his heroism, cool behavior, and dauntless courage.”

In his youth, Jim was known for roller skating, dancing, playing pool, and being musical. He was also a fixture at the Dykeman Park Golf Course. Playing cards with his friends and family was a passion. Jim was an accomplished organist, as well. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. Jim was an active member of Cross-Wind United Methodist Church where he served on committees and sang in the choir for over 50 years. Reading was one of his greatest past times. He was well known to the staff at Logansport Public Library where he spent many days reading and returning novels that he read daily. He appreciated sharing and trading novels with friends, especially in the last few years. The friendships he made while working out daily at Workout Anytime, were valued. The family would like to say a special thanks to all those at Guardian Angel Hospice who supported the family and cared for Jim in his final weeks. For many years, Rena Bryson from the Peru VA, is a nurse who cared for Jim and became his friend. The family extends a heartfelt thanks to her for her special care, concern, and love. All those who showed love to Jim and his family during his illness by bringing flowers and food, sending cards, or visiting, will be forever remembered with love by his family.

In 2015, Jim’s daughter Michelle, honored him by taking him on an Honor Flight to Washing D.C. This flight was arranged for Veterans of all ages and from all branches of service. This experience remained as one of Jim’s fondest memories.

Jim Gwin Roofing, Siding and Sheet Metal was his company, which he owned and operated for more than 40 years along with his son, Chris. In his younger years, Jim was a typesetter at the Pharos Tribune in Logansport. He worked briefly for Chrysler in Kokomo before opening his company. He loved his work but enjoyed his play! Vacationing (driving) the US was a great source of joy for him. He visited most states in the Continental US by train and car. Being an avid photographer, he had many pictures and fond memories to share with anyone who would listen.

Together with his loving wife, Lois, Jim raised eight children. His daughter Karin and her husband Dale Hollenback, son Christopher Gwin and friend Angie Baldini, son Stephen Gwin, son Joseph Boyd and his wife Rita, daughter Lisa Mers, son David Boyd, and daughter Michelle and husband Tony Cain all survive. His nieces, Shirley Griffith, Marsh Guthrie and nephew Sam Griffith, his sister’s children, survive. He was preceded in death by his daughter Karla Murray, his sister Joanne Griffith, and son-in-law Jim Mers. Jim’s life’s joys also included a large number of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

The family will hold a celebration of Jim’s life at Cross-Wind United Methodist Church, 616 N SR 25 in Logansport on Saturday, May 1, at 11:00 a.m. It will be a celebratory service officiated by Pastor Nick Robinson. The service will be followed by a time for sharing stories and visiting with the family from 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. for anyone who does not wish to attend the service.
