Major Charles “Chuck” Eugene Spradling

Major Charles “Chuck” Eugene Spradling (U.S. Army, Ret.) passed peacefully on April 27th at his home in Logansport, Indiana after a lengthy battle from several ailments.

Born September 28, 1935, in Galveston, Indiana, Chuck was the third child to Glenn and Loyda Marie Filbey Spradling, who both preceded him in death.

Chuck was a 1953 graduate of Logansport High School and excelled academically, earning honors for Mathematics and often writing term papers for close friends. He kept in touch with his classmates and enjoyed monthly dinner reunions with them.

On March 27, 1954, in Louisville, Kentucky he married his devoted and loving wife, Sondra “Sonie” Jeanne Rearick Spradling, who survives. Having already enlisted in the United States Army, Chuck began a life of service as a career military officer, advancing him to the rank of Major. Over the years, his family would follow his career throughout the states, and abroad to Saigon, Vietnam, and Okinawa, Japan. He was a proud veteran of the Vietnam War specializing in Personnel Management and Intelligence. Chuck played instrumental roles during the Vietnamese coup d’etat. He also was one of the first on his military base to receive communication that President Kennedy had been assassinated. While stationed in Vietnam, Chuck also gave English lessons to the local Vietnamese.

A self-proclaimed collector of collections, Chuck was an avid collector and had several extensive collections, ranging from Native American Artifacts to exotic seashells from the beaches of Okinawa. Chuck also enjoyed collecting war and Logansport memorabilia. His numerous collections have been featured on several local news media outlets and he was always proud to give tours.

Chuck’s Mathematical skills would come in handy as he would frequently calculate charges in his head before a cashier could ring them up. Chuck was quick-witted and had an uncanny sense of humor. He loved telling stories and making people laugh. Chuck enjoyed keeping his mind sharp by completing crosswords in ink and solving Wheel of Fortune puzzles with few to any letters. Spring was Chuck’s favorite season and he could often be found in the woods hunting Morel Mushrooms. Chuck would usually walk behind you, uncovering mushrooms that you had missed. Chuck left an indelible mark on all who met and knew him. He will be dearly missed by his friends and loved ones.

Surviving with his wife of 67 years are his children; Gene Spradling, Royal Center, Indiana. Jan Gregory, Waxahachie, Texas. Robert Spradling, Logansport, Indiana. Luanne Campbell, West Lafayette, Indiana; 9 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren. and sisters, Sue Bauer and Pate Miller, both of Elkhart, Indiana.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Betty Hallam and Phyllis Delaplane..

A Funeral Service honoring Chuck’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 1, 2021, in Fisher Funeral Chapel.

Full Military Honors will be accorded to pay tribute to Chuck’s distinguished career in the United States Army by the Army Honors Team and the Cass County Honor Guard at the funeral home following the service.
