Barbara A. (Somers) Benedict

Barbara A. Benedict, 95, of Logansport, passed away Monday, October 11, 2021, at Woodbridge Health Campus in Logansport.

Barbara was born on Jan 2, 1926, to the late James and Elizabeth (Thoesen) Somers in Chesterton, IN. She had three older siblings precede her in death, Mary Elizabeth III (Betty), James Harvey Jr and Paul John. She was a member and attended parochial school at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church (built by her great grandfather) and attended All Saints Catholic Church. She was taught by the Sisters of the Notre Dame and graduated 8th grade. She then attended public school and graduated from Chesterton High School in 1945.

She married Robert (Bob) Hughart in 1947 and had four children, Helen Jordan (Logansport, IN), Tom Hughart-Reynolds (Banning, CA), Jack Hughart (Logansport, IN) and George Hughart (deceased). Barbara had 6 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren.

Barbara and her second husband, John Edward Benedict (deceased) were married in 1978 in California. They enjoyed traveling, spending time with friends & family and were very involved in their church until he passed in 1991.

Her work careers included being a seamstress for two sewing factories, a wiring technician for Otis Elevators, financial secretary for the United Steel Workers, enumerator for the 1980 US Census Bureau in CA, agent for the California Employment Development Dept and BMV. After retirement she was elected secretary of the Fontana, CA Lions Club & SOAR for the retired steelworkers. Her final reign was president of the Fontana AARP Chapter 555 for 16 years.

A celebration of life will be held at 4:00 PM on Saturday, October 16, 2021 at Gundrum Funeral Home & Crematory with Father Gustavo Lopez officiating.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 PM until the time of service on Saturday at the funeral home.

A private graveside service will be held at Forrest Hill Cemetery in Greencastle, IN
