Richard L. Hitzemann, 71, West Lafayette, formerly of Logansport, passed away at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, September 28, 2021, in his home surrounded by family. 

The youngest of four siblings, Richard was born August 16, 1950, in Logansport to Henry & Arleen (Schoenefeld) Hitzemann. 

His siblings Roger (Mary Ann), Sandra Ehler, and Ann Coble survive.

Richard was a member of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church in Logansport where he was baptized, confirmed, and later married his wife, Bonnie L. Humm on October 25, 1986. 

Bonnie’s family includes step-daughter, Roxanna Humm (Atkins); granddaughter, Misty Somers (Josh Cook); and three great-grandchildren, Justice, Cole, and Jacob, all lovingly referred to Richard as “Poppy.” 

A member of the United States Air Force, Richard served as a Sergeant E-4 during the Vietnam War era and then worked at Grissom Air Force base until retirement.  He enjoyed riding motorcycles, spending time with family and friends, and taking care of his dog China.  He was a 46-year member of Abate, American Legion Post 60, and VFW Post 3790.

Richard told great stories and had a warm, infectious laugh that will be dearly missed. 

He was preceded in death by his brothers-in-law, Frank Coble and Jerry Ehler, as well as step-son-in-law, Todd Atkins. 

The visitation will be held at St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church in Logansport on Monday, October 25, 2021, from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., with the memorial service following at 11:00 a.m. Pastor K. C. Dehning will officiate the service.

Following the memorial service, a full military honors service will be accorded by uniformed members of the United States Air Force and the Cass County Honor Guard.
