Ron Edward Muhlethaler

Ronald Edward Muhlethaler, 76 of Logansport, was lovingly surrounded by his family as he transcended from this life to his Heavenly home on Monday, October 11, 2021.

On March 23, 1945, Olean, NY, he was born to the late Richard V. and Eileen May (Runnells) Muhlethaler.

A 1963, graduate of Main Twp. High School East in Park Ridge, IL, Ron attended Ripen College for two years before entering the United States Marines Corps in 1966. Ron spent a year in Vietnam as a field radio operator and attained the rank of Corporal before being honorably discharged in 1969. He was awarded the meritorious unit citation. Sadly, some members of our Armed Forces die from service-related issues long after the war ends and in Ron’s case, Agent Orange exposure led to early onset Parkinson’s Disease. He never got the welcome home he deserved, but we will forever be indebted for his service to our Country.

After returning from the war, Ron completed his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Chicago. He went on to earn his Master of Science from the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

Ron was retired from Woodlawn Center (now Peak Community) where he had worked as the director of rehabilitation. He loved his clients and they in turn loved him. His passion was coaching the basketball and horseshoes Special Olympics teams. There are many wonderful memories of trips to the State Finals in Terre Haute.

On December 23, 1985, Ron married the love of his life, Jean (Smith) Muhlethaler, who survives. Family meant the world to Ron and being bestowed with the title of Grandpa was the biggest award he could have ever received. Ron had a heart of gold and loved everyone unconditionally. And, if you were lucky enough to be his friend, you were lucky enough!

Ron could build anything – decks, picnic tables, furniture or home décor – he was a skilled woodworker. He loved nature and captured many beautiful photos and thousands of pictures and videos of his grandchildren. From the many photos he took in Vietnam, Ron made a mini-documentary by narrating the slide show.

Surviving with his wife of 36 years are his daughters, Kim Waychunas Banter, Logansport, Kelly Campbell (Russ), Logansport, Tracy Ganske (Joe), Crystal Lake, IL, and Rae Waychunas (Jim Wilson), Logansport; one son, David Mahlethaler, of Eugene, Oregon; one brother, Dale Muhlethaler; one nephew, Eric (Julie) Muhlethaler; nine grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Along with his parents, there was a glad reunion in Heaven with grandson, David and Derek Tousignant, his beloved grandma, Catherine Theresa Runnnell; and his wife’s parents, Raymond and Loretta Smith.

In honoring Ron’s wishes there will be a private family graveside service at Mount Hope Cemetery, Logansport. Military honors will be accorded by the Cass County Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cass County Special Olympics.
