Richard “Dick” L. Cosgray, 79, of Idaville, IN and The Villages, FL, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, December 25, 2021.
On February 20, 1942, he was born to Arthur G. Cosgray and Virginia M. (Weese) Cosgray Williams. He married Nancy (Williams/Gritten) Cosgray on April 14, 1989.
Dick lived in Idaville all of his life on his family farm. He was a graduate of Idaville High School and enjoyed playing baseball, track, and basketball for the Idaville Greenstreaks. After high school, he went on to Porter Business College in Indianapolis. He then went on to work for Community State Bank of Royal Center as a Loan Officer and later the Bank of Reynolds as Vice President. After many years in the banking industry, he and his wife, Nancy, owned Howe Insurance Agency, Monon, IN. He also farmed for many years.
Dick was a strong Christian man. He was a member of Caley United Methodist Church growing up. While home in the summers he and Nancy attended Bell Center Bible Church and while in Florida they are members of Village of Faith Baptist Church. He was a very generous with his time, talents, and abilities that God provided. He loved others as Christ loved him.
There were many loves in Dick’s life. Most importantly he was a strong family man and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with them. He was in his element watching his grandkids play sports or whatever activities in which they were participating. He also loved cheering on his son’s Lebanon Tigers and granddaughter’s The Villages Charter School teams they were coaching. He also loved driving around looking at the crops. He loved stopping by ‘the boy’s’ Golf cart business, GT Carts, and mowing and cutting brush up at the ‘factory’. In his earlier years, he enjoyed bowling, playing horseshoes, and owning a harness horse and watching the horse races. He became an avid golfer and could not wait to get on the greens with his wife, family, and his Villages friends. He was a fan of Purdue, Cubs, and Colts and enjoyed watching them from his recliner.
Where Dick was there was a fun time had by all. His love for his family and friends filled the room wherever he was. His quick wit and laughter were contagious. If you ever had the privilege of being sung to by him for your birthday you were blessed! Dick enjoyed going out to eat and if you mentioned going for ice cream he was the first one in the car.
The miles Dick traveled were many. He and Nancy went on many trips traveling thousands of miles either by car or motorcycle. He also enjoyed trips with his family—parents, sister, and kids.
Dick did not know a stranger! He was a great conversationalist and listener (and maybe even questioner)! He loved visiting with friends and family either in person or by phone. He built many beloved friendships near and far. Dick and Nancy always made you feel welcome and at home when you would visit. He always showed kindness to others with a humble heart. They loved having family and friends in their home whether in Idaville or Florida. He loved showing people around The Villages via their golf carts. He loved family Christmas gatherings and watching them play games. He played the important role as timekeeper. Even though he was retired, he chaired many a board meetings (breakfast with friends).
He had a knack for figuring numbers and remembering dates (and maybe even remembered the weather on those important dates). Those dates were often tied, once again, back to good memories, family, and friends.
His wife, family, and friends will treasure moments spent with him and will miss him beyond measure! If you called Dick Cosgray a friend you were a friend for life.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy; his daughters, Brenda (Bob) Ellis, Idaville, Barb (Walt) McFarland, Monticello, and son Rick (Shannon), Lebanon, Duane (Schonda) Gritten, Jason (Robin) Gritten, Matt (Michelle) Gritten, and Ben (fiancé Allyson) Gritten, all of Monticello. His sister Reva (Dick) Miller, New Palestine. Brothers and sister-in-laws Patsy (Larry) Grieger , Don (Carol) Williams, Mike (Laurie) Williams, Yvonne (Bill) Miller, and Chris Williams. His grandchildren Amanda (Mike) Murawski, A.J. Ellis, Anna (Payton) Benton, Whitney Cosgray, Drew Cosgray, and Jaden McFarland, Bayli (fiancé Joel) Gritten, Ridge (Karson) Gritten, Brielle Gritten, Jacob Gritten, Sadie Gritten, Maxwell Gritten, and Cody Mattos, Bryson, Ryder, and Rylee Marmolijo. Great grandchildren Maddie Benton and another great granddaughter to be born in April, and Wesley and Layla Murawski, and Kensington Mattos. Also survived by many nephews, nieces, family, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Arthur G. Cosgray and Virginia M. Cosgray Williams, grandparents Edith and Olen Weese and Gurson and Edith Cosgray. In-laws Keith and Bernice Williams, and brother-in-law Joe Williams.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 31, 2021, at Bell Center Bible Church, 11971 SR-16, Burnettsville.
Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, December 30, 2021, at the church.
Burial will follow in Davis Cemetery, Burnettsville.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Villages of Faith Church at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Gideons International, Weekday Religious Education (WRE), or Amazing Grace Missions.
