Robert J. Barr

Robert J. Barr, 87, Logansport (Lake Cicott), went to be with Jesus on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, at his home.

Born July 14, 1935, in Cass County, he was the son of the late Robert W. and Hattie Naomi (Ross) Barr.

A 1953 graduate of Royal Center High School, Bob married his high school sweetheart, Sharon Jean (Million) Barr on August 26, 1956, in the Pisgah Christian Church, She preceded him in death on October 13, 2020,after sharing their lives together for over 64 wonderful years.

Bob was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving during the Korean War Era. He had a deep love for our Country and was very proud of his family members who followed in his footsteps, sharing his love of the skies.

A life-long licensed private pilot, Bob enjoyed flying his vintage U.S. Air Force airplane from the Korean War Era. In 2000, Mayor Richard Hettinger appointed Bob to the Loganport Airport Authority where he served in several capacities. He never lost his love for flying. Just a few weeks ago, Bob was giving rides at the local air show. He was instrumental in developing the Young Eagles program for teens interested in flying. He was a longtime member of the Experimental Aircraft Association. He was also very active at the Grissom Airforce Base

Bob owned and operated the family business, Barr’s Apple Orchard in Lake Cicott. With his outgoing personality, Bob never knew a stranger. His dashing smile and quick wit transcended age and he could relate to people of all ages and backgrounds. This made him a natural in his career as a licensed insurance agent and owner of the Bob Barr State Farm Insurance Agency. Over the years, not only did he provide exceptional customer service and sound advice, he cared about his clients like they were family, too. As a business owner in this community for over 46 years, he also gave back to the community with donations and sponsorships of youth activities.

A devoted member of Pisgah Church. Bob served on the church board in several different capacities. Bob could always be counted on to serve his Lord and Savior. Whatever the need, he was ready and willing. While many of the members of Pisgah are actually related to him, he considered everyone there as part of his family. Bob served as a board member on the Cass County Mental Health Association as well as the Salvation Army Board for a number of years and loved volunteering with their community programs. He was a member of the Morning Kiwanis.

Bob loved sports – golfing, fishing, snowmobiling and hunting. He enjoyed going on annual fishing trips to Canada for over 30 years with his “fishing buddies,” Bob cherished the weekly fishing competitions with Gary Pherson. He was one of the last of the original Canada group. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren kept him young and he tried making all of their activities and sporting events. Bob and Sharon were world-travelers and had traveled to 44 countries and all 50 states.

Surviving are four children: son, Mike (Jennifer) Barr, and daughters, Tammy (Mike Quick) Lewellen, Kim (Robert) Baker, and Deb (Mike) Swartzell; grandchildren: Bridget (Matt) Hayden, Ryan (Stephanie) Lewellen, Blaine (Kristen) Brew, Kris (Maria) Barr, Tanna (Andrew) Shafer, Kayla (Dallas Brown) Swartzell, Kelsey (Patrick) Franzenburg , Braxton (Amanda) Baker, William Barr, Oakley (Jenna) Lewellen, and Owen Swartzell; great-grandchildren: Mason(Rachel), Grace and Mya Hayden, Ezra, Addai, and Ayla Lewellen, Gavin, Griffin and Lenea Brew, Evie, Caroline, and Vada Shafer, Beau and Ben Barr, Ryker and Elijah Lewellen, Levi Baker and James Robert Baker, and Rylee Marie Franzenburg; two sisters, Lucille Berkshire and Dorothy Packard; one sister-in-law, Karen Roller; and several nieces and nephews. Over the years, Bob and Sharon had welcomed nine exchange students to live with them and considered them as extended family: Annette, Fran, Alfredo, Sarah, Sandy, Claudia, Matt, Adrian and Ashley.

In addition to his wife and parents, Bob was preceded in death by his in-laws, Carl and Elizabeth (Masten) Million, great-granddaughter, Miciah Lewellen; a sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Charlie Bow as well as three brothers-in-law Jerry Roller, Gerald Berkshire, Dale Packard; Butch and Sharon Million and his wife’s great-niece, Angie Roller.

Visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m. Monday, November 21 at the Fisher Funeral Chapel, 1801 Chase Road, Logansport, Indiana.

A funeral service celebrating Bob’s life will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 22, at Pisgah Christian Church.

Burial will follow in Pisgah Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Bob’s memory may be made to the Pisgah Christian Church or the Experimental Aircraft Association in care of the Logansport Airport..
