Last Updated on December 19, 2022 by Murray-Weaver Funeral Home

Jonathan E. Ellers, 93, of Kokomo, went home to be with the Lord early Friday morning December 16, 2022, at his home.  He was born March 20, 1929, in Wallins Creek, Kentucky to Rev. Gayle W. and Mildred E. “Little Lady” (Carress) Ellers.  He married Sharon K. Harrison on May 8, 1976, and she survives.

To know Jon was to love and appreciate him.  The Bible tells us that we will know believers by their ‘fruits’  or actions.  Jon was a shining example of those very things; exemplifying love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness and self control.  He adored spending time with his family especially at the many family reunions held over the years.  Gathering to laugh and share stories brought him great joy.  He was gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love as Psalms 145:8 reminds us.  He leaves a legacy for all and will be deeply missed.  Jon has left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Jon was known as a dedicated educator and devoted family man who was beloved by his students and athletes even after his retirement.  He was a lifelong learner, enjoying reading, studying History, researching Genealogy, sailing and camping with his family.   He loved to help others by mentoring, volunteering and lending his time.  He earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana.  He served at Haworth High School in Kokomo from its beginning in 1968 until the two Kokomo High Schools combined in 1985.  During his career, he served as Teacher, Coach, Dean of Boys, Driving Instructor, Sports Director, Assistant Principal and Principal.  Jon served his country in the United States Navy from 1948 – 1951.  After retirement he loved to travel the country and visit family.

Surviving family include his wife Sharon Ellers of Kokomo; his children, Steve (Thomasa) Butler of Kokomo; Rhonda (Terry) O’Grady of Barrie, Ontario, Linda Neubauer of Naperville, IL; David (Adrienne) Ellers of Summerfield, FL; Michelle (Jeff) Inkrott of Fishers, IN; and Melanie (Brian) Elo of Mooresville, IN.  Jon is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren which he truly enjoyed.  Jon is preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Laura Butler, grandson, Benjamin Elo, sisters, Mildred and Miriam and brothers, James, George, Frank and Bill.

A celebration of Jon’s life will be held on Wednesday, December 21, 2022, at Pastarriffic Restaurant, 3001 S. Webster Street in Kokomo with visitation from 11:30 a.m. until service time at 12:30 p.m. with Jeffrey Copp officiating. A meal will be served immediately following services.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Road Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256 or given online at https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org in Jon’s memory.  Murray Weaver Funeral Home in Galveston has been entrusted with arrangements. www.murrayweaverfuneralhome.com
