Charley Alan Smelser

Charley Alan Smelser, 64, of Kokomo, passed away at 3:35 p.m. Thursday, January 19, 2023, at St. Vincent Hospital in Kokomo.  He was born May 7, 1958, in Peru, Indiana to Charley A. “Junior” and Judy (McKinley) Smelser.   Charley married Lynne M. (Smith) Hansen on December 18, 2016, in Kokomo and she survives.

Charley retired from Chrysler in 2020.  He was a member of the Howard Masonic Lodge #93 in Kokomo and currently Master of the Walton Masonic Lodge #423 in Walton.  He was also a former member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, F.&A.M.  Charley enjoyed playing pickle ball as often as he could, traveling, with trips to Hawaii and more recently Scotland.  He loved farming, tractors, and auto racing, but the most important thing in life was his family.  He was a devoted husband, dad, papaw, son, and brother.

Surviving family include his wife Lynne Smelser of Kokomo; his mother, Judy Smelser of Galveston, his children, Samantha (Shawn) Scott of Delphi; Amanda Verdusco of Marion; Kayla Smelser, of Converse; Michael Smelser of Kokomo; stepchildren, Amanda (Jeremy) Hight of Kentucky; Josh Hansen of Galveston; and step daughter in law, Tressie Hansen of Walton.  Charley is also survived by his grandchildren, Zac and Abby Scott of Camden and Colton and Cora Scott of Delphi.  Surviving step-grandchildren include, Emma, Cash, Charlotte and Hazel Hight; and Meela Hansen.  Charley is also survived by two brothers, Daniel Smelser of Galveston, and Ernie (Nancy) Smelser of Flora, and brother-in-law, Ray Smith. Charley also leaves behind his companion and special buddy Barney. He is preceded in death by his father, grandparents, and stepson, Kent Hansen.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, January 26, 2023, at Murray Weaver Funeral Home in Galveston with Pastor Toph Elkins officiating.  Visitation will take place prior to services on Thursday from 12 noon until service time at 3:00 pm at the funeral home.   Masonic Rites will be given at 2:30 p.m. Thursday. Charley will be laid to rest in the Galveston Cemetery next to his father and grandparents.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Indiana Masonic Home, 690 State Street, Franklin, IN. 46131
