Last Updated on February 26, 2023 by Fisher Funeral Chapel

Vaughn E. Mettler, 72, Logansport and Peru, passed away Saturday, February 25, 2023, at The Waters of Peru, following a long battle with cardiovascular disease. He had fought colon cancer and won – having been in remission the past 12 years.  But this time, that great, big loveable heart of his finally wore out.

Born August 17, 1950, in Peru, he was the son of the late Verlin and Virginia Ruth (Buzbee) Mettler.

In 1968, he was a member of the first graduating class at Caston High School. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army National Guard.

Vaughn retired from Tyson Foods following a 15-year career as a case sealer and operator. He had also served as a union representative at Tyson.

An avid outdoorsman, Vaughn loved fishing, hunting and shooting sports. He enjoyed playing BINGO and scratch-offs. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. If you had the luxury of meeting him, you were his friend. He adopted everyone he met and was loved by all. There wasn’t a mean bone in his body.

He would often say, “Keep the smiles coming.” Another phrase he quoted frequently was “The Lord knew what was happening better than any of us.” He put his trust in the Lord which gives his family great comfort knowing where he is now.

He is survived by five children, Jeremy (Tara) Miller, Flora, IN, Jacob Mettler, Bunker Hill, IN, Joseph (Venessia) Mettler, Logansport, IN, Toni Mettler Lalo, Prescott Valley, Arizona, and Karen Luhrsen Smith, Indianapolis, IN; three brothers, Vern, Verlie and Vinyl Mettler, all of Logansport; IN; two sisters, Vonda Bowman, Peru, IN, and Veronica Turnpaugh, Onward, IN; lifelong friends, Jim and Linda Freels, Bunker Hill, IN; grandchildren, Calvin Hoover and Ashlynn Adams, Gabriel, Korbin, Emmitt and Ayla Mettler, all of Logansport, IN, Devin and Austin Mettler, Casper, Wyoming, and Brandon, Kyan, Braxton and Karenna Smith, all of Indianapolis, IN, Shayna Lalo and Owen Lalo, and Briar Monroe; ; his beloved 4-legged grand-furbabies; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. They appreciate your kindness so very much.
