Lavaughn “Tom” Brown

Lavaughn “Tom” Brown, 88, of Walton, passed away at his home Sunday evening, March 26, 2023.  Tom was born May 10, 1934, in Powell Co. Kentucky to Oscar Banford and Cleda Mae (Hatton) Brown.  He married Jacqueline Elaine Carey on January 21, 1956, in Cass County, Indiana and she survives him.

Tom worked several jobs during his lifetime starting as a milk man for Len Haven Dairy.  He later drove for Hostess Bakery and delivered fuel oil for Indiana Farm Bureau.  Tom retired from Deichman and Brandstatter Construction with several years’ service.

Tom was very proud to serve his country in the United States Marines during the Korean conflict.   He was the last charter member of the Cass County Coon Hunter’s club.  He was a member of the Walton American Legion, Robert Ray Brown Post #418 in Walton.  He held several offices at the Legion for over 46 years.  He was a member and past master of the Walton Masonic Lodge in Walton and member of the Logansport V.F.W. Post # 3790. He served as the first volunteer instructor for hunter education in Cass Co.  He also served on the Onward volunteer fire department for many years.  He managed and coached TIPWA little league in Walton for 8 years.   He loved coon hunting, ice fishing, golf, and mushroom hunting.

Surviving family include his wife Jacqueline Elaine Brown of Walton; his children, Sally (Keith) McAndrews, Lynn Brown, Julia (Jeff) Lowe and Gary (Chris) Brown.  His grandchildren include Brad Thomas, Chris McAndrews, Bradley McAndrews, Jeff Hardt, Michelle Dalton, Brandon Brown, Chris Manus, Jason Manus, Jeremy Lowe, Ben Brown and Samantha Wise.  He is also survived by 15 great grandchildren and siblings, Charles Brown, Al (Sandy) Brown, Margie Emery, Sue (Bob) Mordenti and Joanie (Joe) Diaz.  He is preceded in death by his parents, brother: Robert Brown, sister: Juanita Watson, Brother-in-law: Tom Watson, Sister-in-law: Connie Brown, grandson: Brian Thomas, and Son-in-law: Rick Manus.

Private graveside services will be held at Onward’s Deer Creek Cemetery on Thursday, March 30, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. with military honors from the Cass County Honor Guard.  No public visitation is planned.   There will also be a Celebration of life service to be held on Sunday, April 2, 2023, at the Robert Ray Brown American Legion Post #418 in Walton from 2 – 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Robert Ray Brown American Legion Post #418, 111 S.
