J.C. Prater Sr., 80, of Kokomo, passed away Friday August 4, 2023, at North Woods Village Healthcare center in Kokomo. He was born November 12, 1942, in Bon Air, TN to Clyde and Mattie P. Prater. He married Shirley Ann Waltermier on September 28, 1967, and she preceded him in death on October 3, 2012.
J.C. was a tool and die maker for Milbank in Kokomo for many years. He enjoyed sitting on his porch, working word find puzzles, and playing solitaire. He proudly served his country in the United States Army as a green beret in special forces during Vietnam.
Surviving family include his children, Kim (Jeff) Young of Kokomo; Tina (Robert) Bougher of Bringhurst; J.C. (Connie) Prater Jr. of Lafayette; and Sandy Prater of Bloomington. Surviving grandchildren are, Andrea (Jason) Gilkey; Chasity Fields; Wendell (Katie) Miller III; Nicholas (Kayla) Miller; Sydney (Shawn) Mullens; Damon (Kate) Prater; Ronnie (Brooklyn) Copeland III. Surviving great grandchildren include, Alaina Gilkey; Lila Smith; Eva Miller; Kyah Benedict, Layla Fields; Mila Benedict; Jaxson Fields; Cora Miller, Willow Miller, Ronnie Lynn Copeland IV; and Keagan Copeland. J.C. is survived by his twin sister, Joyce Hayes and twin brothers, Ray and Clay Prater. He is preceded in death by his parents, eleven siblings, and his wife Shirley Ann.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 11, 2023, at Kokomo Memorial Park Cemetery with Jeff Walls officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Howard County VFW Post 1152.
