Joseph A. Schlick, age 91, Logansport, passed away at 9:32 a.m. Tuesday, August 29th, at WoodBridge Health Campus.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 7th, at 11:00 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church. Father Adam Mauman will be the celebrant.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Kroeger Funeral Home. Visitation will be also be from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. Thursday, prior to the funeral mass, also at the funeral home.
Burial with full military honors will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
Joe was born on Thursday, December 17, 1931, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Logansport, the son of Frank William and Anna Catherine Goldsmith Schlick.
A 1949 graduate of Washington Township High School, Cass County, he was drafted to serve in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He served from September 1952 until August 1954. He was discharged with the rank of Corporal, having served in the 712th Railroad Battalion, whose slogan was “Got It By The Tail”.
Joe’s civilian employment began with working for the Pennsylvania Railroad, where he was employed for sixteen years. He worked as a yard brakeman in Logansport’s “Yard A” (18th Street). Joe was from a railroad family and his career on the railroad was an important part of his life. As a young man, Joe’s father, Frank, died in a tragic accident in Logansport’s Pennsylvania Car Shops. This event had a strong impact on young Joe’s childhood.
Joe later was employed by NIPSCO, where he retired on April 30, 1997, after thirty years of employment.
Surviving are two sons, Joseph John Schlick, Lafayette and John Robert (Melissa) Schlick, Rochester; also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by brother, Frank W. Schlick; two sisters, Florence Lewellen and Generose Blair; and a half-sister, Frances Parmeter.
He was a member of All Saints Catholic Church and the former St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Knight of Columbus, St. Francis of Assisi Council 561, Logansport. He held life memberships in the American Legion Post 60 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3790, as well as a membership in the Logansport Elks, BPOE #66.
