Billy James Austin

Billy James Austin, 84, Logansport, passed away on Friday, December 15th, 2023, in Miller’s Merry Manor.

Born October 21, 1939, in Bald Knob, Arkansas, he was the son of the late Anna Mae (Holden) and James Henry Austin.

On December 27, 1959, in Kokomo, he was married to Velma June Rose. She preceded him in death on May 5, 2022.

Following his graduation from high school, Billy attended trade school. He retired from the Chrysler KTP transmission plant, after working there for 26 years

Billy was a member of Logansport’s Life Gate Church. He was a life-long member of the Royal Rangers and Frontier Camping Fraternity. His passion for youth led to a wonderful 14-year career when Billy and Velma became caretakers of Camp Wildwood. The family lived in a trailer on the campgrounds and kept Camp Wildwood in pristine condition assuring a safe environment for the campers. Billy and Velma hosted the annual Maple Syrup Festival. The couple lived in an RV for over 25 years in Texas as they shared the love of God through RV mission work with the MAPS ministries. Billy dedicated his entire life helping people, especially through his mission work in Alaska and Colombia where he built churches.

Billy is survived by his children, Alrita (Kent) Morehead of Logansport, Greg (Tina) Austin of Logansport, James (Karma) Austin of Washington, MO; Brother, Joseph Austin; sisters Martha Sitzes, Phyllis St. Claire, Ann Newman; six grandchildren, Laura Lapcheska, Stephanie (David) Dragoo, Cameron (Siarra) Austin, Tanner (Sarah) Austin, Tracy Austin, Tyler (Bethany) Austin, and five great- grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Enochs.

Visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m. Monday, December 18 in Fisher Funeral Chapel, A funeral service celebrating Billy’s life will follow at 4 p.m. with his son, James Austin, officiating.
