Eva Elaine Surface, 83, of Lafayette, passed away Friday, May 3, 2024, at her residence.

Born on April 30, 1941, in Mozelle, Kentucky, Elaine is the daughter of the late Creed and Eva (Brown) Turner. She was married on August 19, 1962, at Beech Fork United Methodist Church in Mozelle, Kentucky, to Larry E. Surface who preceded in death on February 25, 1996.

Elaine was a schoolteacher and a lifelong learner. She started her teaching career in Huntington, Indiana, but ultimately spent nearly 25 years in the Logansport Community School Corporation. She taught at Longfellow Elementary and Columbia Elementary schools before retiring in 2002.

After she retired, Elaine traveled extensively. She made friends all over the globe from all walks of life. She was the type of person who never met a stranger. She loved telling jokes and stories and was a huge fan of college basketball. A proud Kentucky Colonel, and a devoted Kentucky Wildcats fan.

Surviving Elaine is a son, Joseph (Tina) Surface of Cincinnati, OH; daughter, Esther (Matthew) Lewis of Fishers; six grandchildren, Ethan Surface, Lauren Surface, Jarrett Surface, Rebecca Lewis, Gabrielle Lewis, and Nathaniel Lewis; several nieces and nephews.

Elaine was preceded in death by two sisters, Imogene Snyder, Ada Turner, and one brother, Aubrey Turner.

A celebration of life service will be held at 5:00 pm Thursday May 9, 2024, in the Gundrum Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Aaron Gross, with burial to follow at Galveston Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 until time of services at the funeral home.
