Dewey G. Cowen

Dewey G. Cowen, 78, of Galveston, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at the Wesleyan Health Care Center in Marion. He was born April 5, 1946, in Warsaw, Indiana to Willis G. and Edna L. (Whetstone) Cowen. Dewey married Sharon Schaadt in Rockford, Ohio on October 2, 1971, and she survives.
Dewey graduated from Tyner High School in Tyner, Indiana. He went on to graduate from Indiana University, Ball State University and Income Tax School at Purdue University. He worked as a CPA for many years and became an Indiana Master Plantsman working for Brehob and Salsbery Nursery’s in Indianapolis. He loved horses, dogs and trees. He was an advisory member of various horse and pony boards at the state and local level and enjoyed judging horse shows. He was also a CPA state agribusiness committee member and served as chairperson in 1987. Dewey was a member of the American Legion and the Indiana Farm Bureau. He served his country in the United States Army during Vietnam with the rank as SP5. Dewey’s mission statement was, “To do good in my life” and he certainly accomplished his goal.
Surviving family include his beloved wife, Sharon; his daughters, Lyn (Jay) Ocken and Sara (Gary) Weiderhaft. His grandchildren, Jarrett and fiancée Shianna Bradley, Justine and Jhett Ocken and Ava and Connor Weiderhaft. He is also survived by one brother, Rodger Cowen. Dewey is preceded in death by his parents, sister and brother-in-law, Bonnie and Rodger Sherk and niece Beth. His family would like to thank Wesleyan Rehab and Heart to Heart Hospice, especially “Kimmy” for their excellent care of Dewey. Also special thanks to Pastor Brent Cripe and beloved neighbors, classmates, friends, V.A. buddies and family for their love and kindness during Dewey’s illness.
A time of visitation will take place Saturday, June 22, 2024, from 10:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Center Community of Faith Church Fellowship Hall, 1475 E. CR 1125 S, Galveston, Indiana. Memorial services will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the Church with Pastor Brent Cripe officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Shriner’s Hospital for Children in Dayton, OH; Young America Vol. Fire Dept; Center Community of Faith Church or plant a tree in Dewey’s memory.
When coming for visitation at the church, please enter through the fellowship hall doors for a time of sharing and refreshments with the family.
