Robert Raymond “Bob” Shafer, 96, of Burnettsville, Indiana, passed away Friday evening, January 3, 2025, in St. Franciscan – East Hospital, Lafayette.
Born October 15, 1928, in Adams Township, Carroll County, he was the son of the late Homer Dale and Catherine E. (Shaffer) Shafer.
Following graduation from Adams Township High School, Bob enlisted in the United States Army. He was proud to be a Veteran of World War II, serving in Guam as the head mechanic of the motor pool. Bob was a lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3790 and the American Legion Post 60.
Bob was retired from Sears & Roebuck where he worked as the manager of the automotive service department for years. He most recently worked in the maintenance department at A. Raymond Tinnerman, retiring at the age of 88. He had one of the strongest work ethics of any man you’d ever meet – chopping firewood in his 90’s.
Bob was the unofficial “Mayor” of Lockport, Indiana. He loved his life taking care of the Shafer Ranch. He was always seen with a cold can of Dr. Pepper in his hand and a pouch of tobacco in his back pocket.
Bob and his wife, Janet A. (Appleton) Shafer celebrated 57 wonderful years of marriage this past year. Family was everything to Bob and his kids, grandkids and great grandkids kept him young at heart. He was also the “adopted” honorary dad and grandpa of numerous kids and grandkids over the years. He was an avid Purdue fan and enjoyed horse-shoe pitching.
Surviving with his wife, Janet, are his children, Kerry Shafer, Kurt (Carol) Shafer, Kelly Shafer, Kent Shafer, and Krista (Jody) Wilburn; siblings, Doug (Ann) Shafer, and Kay (Steve) Wright. He was affectionately known as “Bobby” to his fifteen grandchildren, many great grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brother-in-law, Dallas Appleton; sisters-in-law, LaDinna (Bernie) Altman, and Joni Appleton and many nieces and nephews and extended family members.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by two sons, Kevin and Kregge Shafer; one granddaughter, Amanda Shafer; one brother, Homer Shafer, Jr.; three sisters, Clarabelle (Don) Potts, Evelyn (George) Vianco, and Shirley (Dick) Long; one brother-in-law, Max Appleton; and his wife’s parents, Bob and Mary Ann (Sailors) Appleton.
