Verla F. (Glover) Boyd, 82, of Galveston, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Sunday, May 18, 2025, at Century Villa Health Care Center in Greentown. She was born December 7, 1942, in Alton, Illinois to Frank and Nellie (Leverett) Glover. She married James D. Boyd and he survives.
After her youngest went to kindergarten, Verla went back to nursing school and graduated from IUK. She worked at the local hospitals and ended her career as a plant nurse at Chrysler, from which she retired. After retirement, she found much joy in playing autoharp with the Hoosier String Players. She had a lifelong love of music, which she passed to her three children. Verla had an immense love for people. Her children often discussed how blessed they were to be raised by a mother that loved people like she did. As her family continued to grow, great and great great grandbabies arrived. She would say “they can call me Granny the Great” because that sounded so much better than great grandma. Throughout her very long battle with Alzheimers, Verla continued to be kind and appreciative. One of her most used phrases was “oh well, life goes on but God is good”. Throughout her health journey, she had the absolute best care. We are very thankful for Bloom Assisted living and memory care, Century Villa Health Care, and AseraCare Hospice.
Surviving family include her husband James D. Boyd, her children, Dale Boyd, Marcy (Tim) Stahl, and Kathleen (Matt) Bassett. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Luke (Kaley) McCoy, Jacob (Tasha) McCoy, Sadie Bassett, Valerie (Jeremy) Gibson and Natalie Bowman. She was affectionally known as “Granny The Great” to nine beautiful children. Also surviving are siblings, Brenda Dooley, Sigel Glover and Teri Byrd. She is preceded in death by her parents, brother, Robert Glover, sister, Jessie Wilson and great grandchildren Baby Boy McCoy (parents, Luke and Kaley McCoy) and Baby McCoy (parents, Jacob and Tasha McCoy).
A celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, June 1st, 2025, at Murray Weaver Funeral Home in Galveston at 4:00 p.m. with Pastor Jeremy Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Center United Brethren Cemetery near Young America. Friends and family may visit from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. prior to services at the funeral home on Sunday. Memorial contributions may be given to support Century Villa Health Care Center in acquiring an updated lift, enhancing their ability to provide excellent care for their patients, checks can be made payable to Marcy Stahl.
