Cpl. Humberto “Bert” A. Sanchez, 22 of Logansport passed away on August 26, 2021, while serving his country at the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan.

“Bert” was born on December 2, 1998, in Logansport, Indiana, and is the son of Coral Briseño and Humberto Sanchez.

Cpl. Sanchez was a 2017 graduate of Logansport High School where he excelled in academics and athletics. “Bert” was well liked by his soccer teammates, classmates, coaches, and teachers.

After graduating, “Bert” enlisted and was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California. He was then called to serve as an Embassy Guard in Jordan before being re assigned to the Kabul airport.

Cpl. Sanchez was honored to serve his country as a Marine and the example of his willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice has made him a hero to his family, community, and the United States of America.

Surviving “Bert” is his mother Coral Briseño (Alan Doolittle) of Logansport; his father, Humberto Sanchez; sister, Carol “Abi” (Giovanny) Sanchez of Logansport; brother, Ariel Loran and Axel Loran, both of Logansport, niece, Dahlia G. Cardenas of Logansport, stepfather, Ariel N. Loran of Logansport; girlfriend, Taylor Duncan, of Hawaii; and a numerous amount of extended family members.

Visitation for Cpl. Sanchez will be held from 1:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Monday, September 13, 2021 at LifeGate Church, 831 Burlington Ave, Logansport, IN 46947.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 also at LifeGate Church in Logansport. Burial with full Military Graveside Rites will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Logansport.

SUNDAY, SEPT. 12: Procession for Fallen Marine Corporal Humberto Sanchez

The body of Marine Corporal Humberto A. “Bert” Sanchez will arrive at Grissom Air Reserve Base at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Sunday Sept. 12, 2021. A procession escorting his body to Logansport is expected to depart the airbase between 10:45 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.

If you would like to show your support for Cpl. Sanchez and line his route home on Sunday, Sept. 12, the path of the route back to Logansport is as follows:

The procession route is as follows:

  • North on Foreman from the base, 
  • West or left on SR 218 to US 35, 
  • North or right on US 35 to East Main Street., (Logansport)
  • Right on East Main Street
  • Continuing west on East Main Street to Burlington Avenue 
  • Turning north or right on Burlington, (Burlington turns into 3rd Street) 
  • Continuing north to East Market Street
  • Turning east or right on East Market, continue east on Market Street to 18th Street
  • Turning north or left on 18th Street, staying on 18th Street for two blocks
  • Turning west or left onto Broadway for 1 ½ blocks and arriving at Gundrum Funeral Home on 1603 East Broadway   

There will be a garrison flag positioned at Market and 8th Streets in Logansport. The procession will stop there for approximately 30 seconds.

There will be no ceremony upon Cpl. Sanchez’s arrival at the Funeral Home. The funeral home asks that you please allow the family the privacy they deserve at that time and not congregate around the funeral home.

The Indiana State Police say those wishing to honor Corporal Sanchez’s ultimate sacrifice to our country are encouraged to line the procession route. Suggested viewing areas are Foreman near Grissom Air Reserve Base, along State Road 218 and U.S. 35 in Walton, and along the entire route in Logansport.

TUESDAY, SEPT. 14:

A public funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 14, 2021, at LifeGate Church in Logansport. Burial with full Military Graveside Rites will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Logansport.

The details of the procession route on the day of the funeral is as follows:

  • Leaving LifeGate Church and turning North onto Burlington Ave.
  • Proceeding on Burlington Ave to the intersection of 3rd and Market Street
  • Turning East onto Market Street to 6th Street
  • Turning North onto 6th Street and proceeding to Hanna Street
  • Turning right on Hanna Street and then left onto Pleasant Hill and into Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Per the family’s request, all media are asked to respect the privacy of the family and remain off the premises during visitation hours, funeral services, and graveside services.
