Beverly Sue (Downhour) Metcalf went peacefully to her final home in the early hours of Friday, March 13, 2026. Born on February 10, 1940, in Lincoln, Indiana as the daughter of Charles A. and Martha E. (Downhour) Shietze, and stepdaughter of Robert R. Shietze. On October 10, 1958, she married Cleo O. Metcalf and the two celebrated 58 years together prior to his passing in 2017.
Beverly was a bank teller for over thirty years at First Farmers Bank & Trust in Galveston, starting her career with the bank when it was Twelve Mile State Bank. She enjoyed working at the bank and met numerous people, many of which became lifelong friends. In her early years, She worked as a candy striper at Memorial Hospital in Logansport.
During their time together, Beverly and Cleo enjoyed taking day trips (never overnight as Cleo didn’t like to be away from home), being a Twister Sister and Mister, as well as spending time with family and friends. They spent numerous hours playing cards with Cleo’s family. After Cleo’s passing, Beverly reunited with several of her high school classmates and enjoyed their company whether it was visiting a local Galveston restaurant for lunch or simply eating on Beverly’s front porch. Beverly also loved the monthly Saturday lunches with the “townies” as it was a time to catch up with everyone.
Beverly loved giving to those she loved. Not a day would pass when she wouldn’t go bargain hunting at either Dollar General, Dollar Tree, or Goodwill (her favorites) and she would always manage to find something that would remind her of you and save it as a gift whenever she saw you next.
Family meant everything to Beverly. She always enjoyed her Friday night dinners with her daughter and son-in-law, especially when her great-granddaughter was able to visit, as well as her Sunday night dinners with her brother and friends.
Left to cherish her memory are daughter (René Weaver), son-in-law (Tim Weaver), grandson [Cory (Lindsey Dauby) Weaver], great-granddaughter [Gabby (fiancé Kyle Poland) Weaver], and grand-dog (Phoebe Rose) whom she dog sat every day for two years, as well as her brother, [Charles David Butch (Susie) Downhour]. Beverly is also survived by sisters-in-laws [Linda Sue Metcalf and Carolyn (Metcalf) Scott], brother-in-law (Leonard Hartman), and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Beverly was preceded in death by her husband Cleo, parents Charles Downhour, Martha Shietze, and step-father Robert Shietze.
The family sends a heartfelt thanks to Kokomo Place and Paradigm Hospice for their kindness and care towards Beverly. The family also thanks all of those who have lifted us up in prayer as such kindness is truly appreciated. We love you all.
In lieu of flowers, the family request you consider a memorial contribution to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church or the Galveston Volunteer Fire Department.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 19, 2026, at Murray Weaver Funeral Home in Galveston with Rev. John Kolb officiating. Friends and family may gather to visit with the family from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home on Thursday.
