Today is Diabetes Alert Day. It is always the fourth Tuesday in March. It is a one-day wake up call to remind people of the importance of being screened for any kind of diabetes, Type 1, Type 2, Prediabetes, or Gestational.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and also the American Diabetes Association, there are approximately 38 million people in the United States with diabetes. Approximately 9 million people have the disease and don’t know it. This is an epidemic!
Educating my community with the latest information and facts regarding diabetes could spare people from blindness, strokes, heart attacks, kidney failure, amputations, and other complications in the future.
Diabetes wasn’t on my radar! After retiring from the classroom eight years ago, I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. It has changed my life forever. The increasing number of people with diabetes is striking. We need to do more to change this pattern. Awareness is the key. The continual diabetic research being done today has offered diabetics the hope of finding the right fit to manage the disease.
If you suspect a family member, friend, or neighbor could possibly have diabetes, don’t hesitate any longer, please encourage them to see a physician immediately. It could save a life.
