Carole Jean Townsend (Benedict), of Twelve Mile, IN, passed away on May 12, 2026. She had just recently celebrated her 92nd birthday with her family. Carole is survived by Wallace, her husband of 72 years.

Carole was born April 19, 1934, in Peru IN to William and Irene Benedict (Brandt). Growing up in Denver, IN, as the first of six siblings, Carole was a model example of loyalty to those who called her friend. As a girl, always seeking adventures that a small town could offer, Carole developed many interests; she especially loved horse riding, swimming, sewing, and playing the piano. She loved her bicycle and had a paper route. Her attendance at Denver Baptist Church for many years was important to her, and it was there as a youngster that she was baptized. In 1952, she graduated as valedictorian of her class at Jefferson Township School in Denver. In 1953, she married Wallace (Wally) Townsend of Twelve Mile IN. The Townsends soon settled into their farm home just outside of Twelve Mile where they remained throughout their marriage. There they raised six children: Ryan, Brad, Nick, Shelly, Tob, and Andy.

Carole loved to cook and bake for her family and friends for dinners, cookouts, and reunions. She loved to sing and play the piano. Always active in music ministry at Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Twelve Mile, she played the piano and organ for 65 years. She also sang in community choirs.

Carole pursued a career in healthcare once all her children were of school age, working for nearly 30 years at Logansport State Hospital (Longcliff). After starting there as an attendant, she became an attendant supervisor. Carole finished her healthcare career as a nurse after receiving her RN nursing degree in her late fifties.

Carole loved to travel with Wally, and they visited many places, including Texas, California, Alaska, Florida, New York, and the Dakotas, among others. She treasured her many grandchildren and great grandchildren and always had a listening ear for them, eager to hear of each one’s adventures. Carole had a generous heart and was deeply loved by her husband and family. She will be greatly missed.

A celebration of her life will be held on June 15, 2026 at 2 p.m. at the new Twelve Mile Community Building.
