Kathleen A. Gunther, 73, of Logansport, passed away on Saturday, May 30, at her residence peacefully with Kevin and their two dogs.

Born May 4, 1953, in Chicago, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Shirley (Born) Cella.

Kathleen was married twice with one son and gaining two additional sons by marriage along with a grandson and granddaughter.

Kathleen had a heart for those needing a helping hand and a listening ear. At the Salvation Army, where she worked as a bookkeeper for several years, she met folks who needed a warm meal as well as volunteers who were trying to help however they could. Kathleen fit right in there — that was her kind of crowd – people who cared for one another.

When she worked at Secondary Metal, she saw a lot of the same people again, who were just trying to get by. Some were selling scrap to make ends meet, some just needed someone to treat them kindly. She always did. She handled the bookkeeping, but what mattered to her most were the people who walked through the door.

Kathleen also volunteered at Emmaus Mission Center, and she really enjoyed it. It’s a place that does a little bit of everything – a homeless shelter, a thrift store, and food pantry. She liked being part of that, especially at Christmas time. Her handwriting was recognized by many as she wrote out the thank you notes to those who donated.

In her spare time, Kathi enjoyed making quilts, winter scarfs, winter hats and Afghan blankets. Most of which she gave away to those in need or to close friends or family. She loved gardening, being outside, going to town festivals and craft shows. Her most favorite item was a funnel cake with extra powdered sugar. Her absolute favorite meal was Italian beef sandwich dipped in gravy covered in sweet peppers and fries, although she had moved away from the Chicago area, she never lost the taste for the food. When a craving would strike, Kathleen and Kevin would meet her son John and his wife halfway for lunch at Portillos. She was an avid dog lover, all of her life always having at least one furry friend at her feet.

Many were not aware that she had been battling cancer for the last 10 years. With countless treatments, hospital and doctor visits. She fought long and hard against it. She did not share with many people, instead, she would rather listen to someone and was interested in what they were doing. Since her treatments impeded her from traveling far from the house, she would spend hours on the phone talking with friends and family, always answering and asking how they were doing first. She was a very selfless person.

During her retirement years Kathi and Kevin developed a special relationship, caring and supporting each other. They enjoyed conversations with family and civil war reenactments.

She is survived by her son, John (Lisa) Kenyeri Jr., and a special friend Kevin Martin.

A memorial gathering of family and friends will be held from 4-8 p.m. Friday, June 5th in Fisher Funeral Chapel.
