Betty Jean (Johnson) Carney, 86, of Twelve Mile, passed away on Friday, June 5, 2026, at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

Born in Flora, IN on December 2, 1939, to the late W.N. and Waunita (Cox) Johnson. On July 7, 1957, she married James “Jim” R. Carney at the Anoka United Methodist Church, and he survives.

Betty worked for Moss Fertilizer until her retirement. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Miami Baptist Church and Home Economics Club. Betty enjoyed country music, going to the casino, playing cards, going out to eat with friends and family, and she was always ready for “beer-thirty.” Her and her husband enjoyed over two decades of wintering in Florida together. But above all, she loved her family deeply and cherished time spent with her children in her own kind of way.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her sons, James “Jim” (Christy) Carney Jr. and Robert “Bob” Carney; grandchildren, Kellie (Nick) Serra and Twyla (Nolan) Slabby; and six great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life, with food and fellowship, will be held Saturday, July 25th from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Tweve Mile Community Building.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the Twelve Mile Community Building, 7913 IN-16, Twelve Mile, IN 46988.
