Janet Hertenstein

hertensteinJanet Hertenstein, 97 of Deer Creek, passed away Friday, November 6, 2015 at Woodbridge Health Campus in Logansport.

Born on July 27, 1918 in Chicago, IL she was the daughter of the late Edward and Theresa (Horn) Gangler.  On July 21, 1945 in Elmwood Park, IL she married the Rev. Theodore L. Hertenstein who preceded in death on September 7, 1996.

Janet was a homemaker and a pastor’s wife, before her marriage she was an IBM operator at the former National Tea Company in Chicago.  She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, was a member of the W.E.L.C.A, and the quilters club.

Janet enjoyed sewing, embroidery, crocheting, and plastic canvas needle work. She loved watching the flowers and birds from her front porch, doing word searches and cheering for the Chicago Cubs and Indianapolis Colts.

Survivors include two daughters, Evelyn (Brian) Wicker, Burleson, TX; Teresa (Robert) Cooksey, Deer Creek, IN; son, Ronald Hertenstein, New Haven, IN; grandchildren, David (Mary) Dowty, Juliet, TN; Jennifer Hertenstein and companion Andrew Gunn; Jeremy (Lindsey) Hertenstein, both of Ft. Wayne; Jill (Donald) Barrett, Indianapolis; James (Michelle) Cooksey, Delphi; step grandchildren, April (Levi) Douglass, Bryan, TX; B.J. (Jone) Wicker, Little Rock, AR; great grandchildren, Landon Place; Berak, Bryson, Lillie, and Parker Hertenstein; Drew and Corde Gunn; Krisalyn and Drake Barrett; Hannah and Hunter Dowty; step great grandchildren, Owen and Trevor Douglass; Joseph and Matthew Wicker; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Walter, Clemence, Harry, and Ralph Gangler; and four sisters, Martha Selkow, Grace Gangler, June Gangler, and Maybelle Blackburn.

A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at Faith Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dr. Richard Hertenstein, Jr officiating.  Burial will be in the Rock Creek Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 8:00 PM Monday, November 9, 2015 at Gundrum Funeral Home. There will also be an hour of visitation before the service at the church.
