saviniLewis “Lew” Savini, 82, Key West, Florida, formerly of Logansport, passed away at 7:54 p.m. on Wednesday, February 10, 2016, in Carmel, following a long illness.

Lew was born May 4, 1933, in Logansport to Romeo and Sophia Dietrich Savini, and had been a 45-year resident of Key West, Florida.

He graduated from Logansport High School in 1951, and graduated from Logan Business School in 1952.

Lew was inducted into the United States Army and completed basic training, transferring to Ft. Riley, Kansas City Hospital, where he trained as a field medic. He served overseas in Yokohama, Japan, and later in Korea. He was honorably discharged, and continued his education at Ball State University where he completed his undergraduate work. He taught at a Department of Defense school in Palermo, Italy. He earned a master’s degree in business education from Indiana University.

Lew was a business management professor at Dade County Community College, and he also worked for the U.S. Navy office in the procurement office before retiring.

He was a founding member of the Key West Metropolitan Community Church, and the founder of Friends of Animals in Key West.  He was a lifelong animal activist.

Lew is survived by his life partner, Mark Annicelli, of Key West and Boston; nieces, Lois Jean Parrett, Melvin (Jan), Noblesville, Debra L. Savini Smith (Carl), Logansport, Tina M. Savini Wiese (late, Jerry), Logansport, Carolyn Jo Savini Holcomb (Tim), Logansport, Kathy Savini Scott (John), Logansport, Pamela S. Savini Altice (Rob), California, Janice Savini, Linda Savini, and Marcina Savini Coble (Jerry), Logansport; and sister-in-law, Bettie Savini, Logansport.

Lew is also survived by nephews, Ronald Savini, Monticello, Steven Savini (Beth), Logansport, Terry Savini, Logansport, John J. Savini (Carol), Illinois, Michael A. Savini (Rosie) Clayton, Indiana, Patrick L. Savini (Janet) Iowa, and Jackie L. Savini (Toni), Logansport. He is also survived by many great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

Lew is preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Katia Savini, Josephine “Jo” Savini Parrett (C. F. “Bud”), Benito “Benny” Savini, Nello Savini (Helen), John Joseph “Butchie” Savini, Leo Savini (Betty), Karl Adam Savini, Eleanor “Ellie” Savini, and Anna Marie “Annie” Savini. He is also preceded by a life
partner, Dennis J. Crowley.

The graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, February 18, 2016, at Mount Hope Cemetery.
