Last Updated on August 3, 2016 by cassnetwork

Indiana television icons Cowboy Bob and Sammy Terry, along with Smokey Bear, will make appearances at the Indiana State Fair to help the Department of Natural Resources celebrate 100 years of Indiana State Parks.

The State Fair runs from Aug. 5-21.

Programs involving Cowboy Bob, Sammy Terry and Smokey Bear will be at the Natural Resources Building, the hub of DNR State Fair activities. Check dnr.IN.gov/statefair for the entire DNR schedule.

Cowboy Bob will host a program at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6.

Cowboy Bob was a fixture on the old WTTV-4 and hosted the afternoon cartoon show “Cowboy Bob’s Corral.” He also directed the “Indiana Outdoors” TV show, which featured the Indiana State Park Naturalist Service. The show, which began in November 1974, aired on six commercial stations and more than 200 cable stations by 1980. The fair program will reprise some of the “Indiana Outdoors” and “Cowboy Bob” shows.

Sammy Terry will present “The Sammy Terry Show” on Friday, Aug. 5; Saturday, Aug. 13; and Friday, Aug. 19. Each show runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Sammy Terry hosted scary movies on his “Nightmare Theater” show, which also aired on WTTV 4.

Finally, Indiana State Parks and the National Park Service will host a shared 100th birthday party from 2 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 14. The party will feature history, information about park wildlife, an appearance by Smokey Bear, birthday cupcakes and giveaways.

Indiana this year is celebrating the centennial of its system of state parks. The first state parks, McCormick’s Creek and Turkey Run, opened in 1916 as a gift to Hoosiers in honor of the state’s centennial.
