The Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) is reminding taxpayers that the tax filing deadline for 2018 is April 17.

Paper forms will require a postmarked date of April 17, 2018 to be considered timely. Electronic filing can be submitted online any time before April 18.

Some taxpayers will qualify to file their both their state and federal taxes electronically for free with Indiana freefile (INfreefile). INfreefile offers individuals with an adjusted gross income of $66,000 or less in 2017 several options for filing.

All vendor options and qualifications for INfreefile can be found online at www.freefile.dor.in.gov. Vendors for this tax season include:

  • 1040NOW
  • FreeTax USA
  • H&R Block
  • OLT Online Taxes
  • TaxAct
  • TurboTax

To ensure individuals are not charged for these services, they must access these options through the INfreefile website, which can also be found on DOR’s homepage (www.in.gov/dor). Please note, if the taxpayer has used any of these vendors in the past, they will need to create a new account each year to qualify for no-cost filing.

If a taxpayer cannot complete their tax return by the filing deadline, they may apply for a filing extension with DOR or the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Remember if an extension is granted, it only extends the time a customer has to file, they are still responsible to pay taxes owed by April 17, 2018. A payment plan may be an option if more than $100 is owed. More information on payments and billing can be found on the DOR website at www.in.gov/dor/4708.htm.

Customers may call DOR Customer Service at 317-232-2240, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. EST with any questions or concerns.
