Logansport working on major downtown facades

It is National Preservation Month, and in Logansport, city officials are proceeding with plans to help local building owners with state funding to assist them.

The Logansport Board of Public Works and Safety has approved a contract with Synthesis Incorporation of Indianapolis to establish a major structure façade program. The program is similar to those in other cities that have been funded with Community Development Block Grant funding.

“We asked Arin Shaver, our city/county planning director, to research several firms that have performed this kind of work in other cities,” Mayor Dave Kitchell said. “Arin has come up with a name that has a track record in delivering this kind of project, and we think it will potentially have a lasting impact on downtown Logansport.”

The historic State Theatre is among eight downtown structures that will be part of the work tasked to Synthesis. Each of the eight buildings contributes to the community character, Kitchell said.

“This is something that could have a positive outcome for downtown property values and further efforts to not only open more retail downtown and bring investment downtown, but add housing in upper stories of our legacy buildings.”

If the city is successful, the buildings would be the beneficiaries of up to $500,000 in grant funding.

A housing master plan identified downtown buildings as one of three recommended areas for expanding housing in the city.
