A Logansport retiree who makes a point to ensure veterans get to their medical providers is recognized this week with a special city honor.

Don McMahan has been named Citizen of the Week for his tireless efforts in transporting any veteran at his own expense.

“During Memorial Day week, we all need to say thank you not just to veterans, but to those who support them long after they have been discharged,” Mayor Dave Kitchell said Tuesday. “Don didn’t serve in the military, but he serves military retirees unselfishly out of respect for their contributions to our country. We’re grateful for his sacrifice and good will.”

McMahan is a Royal Center native and graduated from the former Royal Center High School in 1962. For 32 years, he was employed at Logansport State Hospital. He also has been self-employed as a handy man. He has been active in the local Roosters organization.

“Any veteran I know that needed help, I’ve helped them,” McMahan said.

He will receive a $20 gift certificate and a certificate from the Mayor’s Office. The Citizen of the Week is sponsored by the city and recognizes local residents, natives and former residents for their contributions.
