The monthly report from Logansport’s Building Commissioner Office shows a sharp increase in the amount of construction projects.

Through May, building permits for $6,979,065 in construction were issued. That compares to $3,591,973 for the first five months of 2015, which results in nearly a 50 percent year to year increase.

Building Commissioner Deb Beattie’s report also indicated the number of permits was up 18 over the previous year, and total square feet for all projects is up by more than 4,000.

The Logansport Board of Public Works and Safety also heard from Beattie on the status of the former home of the late Mayor Gene Monahan on 15th Street in the neighborhood known as Midtown. The home, which was once visited by the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy during his presidential whistlestop campaign in 1968, was recently sold. The new owner will be replacing the roof on the structure. A hearing on the progress of work will be held at the board’s July 3 meeting.
