Meagher reappointed to Utility Service Board

A man appointed to fulfill a term in 2016 has been reappointed for a full four-year term.

Mike Meagher, retired executive director of the Area Five Agency on Aging and Community Services, will serve another term when his current term expires this month. Mayor Dave Kitchell announced the appointment today after a meeting with him.

“We’re fortunate to have a group of Utility Service Board members that is passionate about moving the utility from the coal-fired generating plant era to 21st advances in solar power and improved technology. They have an eye on greater value for LMU ratepayers and the city’s future,” the mayor said. “In Mike, we not only have a board member who knows the perspectives of the elderly and those who consume community services, but his background as a USB member previously helped bring us to a point when we have lower electric rates and sound financials.”

While Meagher was a Democratic appointment in this and previous administrations, a change in state law has removed the political restrictions on mayors and city councils to appoint members. All members must reside in the service area of municipal utilities, but no more than two members of the five-member board can reside outside the city limits. Currently, Meagher and board president Jay King both live outside the city where roughly half LMU’s ratepayers reside. The other mayoral appointees are Mike Laird and Mark Bender. The city council appointees are Marty Monahan and King.
