Record Fourth of July travel weekend expected in 2019

Last Updated on July 1, 2019 by cassnetwork

With the weather finally starting to resemble summer, it’s a perfect time for a fun holiday weekend.

According to AAA projections, a record number of folks – around 49 million – are expected to travel for the four-day, Fourth of July holiday weekend. Of those, more than 41 million are expected to travel by vehicle. Those numbers would represent a four percent increase over the 2018 holiday.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) wants you to be safe. Be mindful of possible heavy traffic as you make your way throughout our great state. Understand that you could see increased travel times, so leave plenty of time to safely arrive at your destination. If you encounter crews out on the roadway, please slow down and move over. Give them room to operate.

Over the holiday, INDOT is lifting restrictions and closures where possible, but in some locations, it’s simply not safe to do so. Plan your route by visiting indot.carsprogram.org to see where you can expect to encounter work zones for road construction projects.

In our District, there are only a few things to tell you about with regard to travel on interstates.

On I-94:

  • The westbound I-94 ramp connecting to northbound I-65 is closed in Lake County.

On I-65:

  • Southbound I-65 is one lane between the Indiana Toll Road and Central Avenue in Lake County.
  • The ramps connecting to southbound I-65 from U.S. 12/20 are closed in Lake County.
  • I-65 is two lanes in each direction on the southbound side of the road between U.S. 30 and U.S. 231. As part of that project, the northbound ramps at 109th Avenue are closed.

Be safe out there, folks, and enjoy the holiday weekend!

Drivers in Northwest Indiana can monitor road closures, road conditions, and traffic alerts at any time via the District’s social media channels: www.Facebook.com/INDOTNorthwest or Twitter @INDOTNorthwest. Or visit http://www.trafficwise.in.gov for INDOT’s TrafficWise Traveler Information Service.
