The growing number of students participating in the local band program will receive a boost from an annual fund-raising event sponsored by the city.

The Mayor’s Golf Tournament Oct. 16 will benefit the Logansport High School Music Department which is experiencing renewed interest from middle school students. The band currently has about 75 members, but band director Ned Boyd said it may grow to as many as 100 members next year when the current eighth-grade class become freshmen.

All proceeds from the golf tournament will benefit the band’s new instrument purchases.

Mayor Dave Kitchell, who played in the LHS Band from 1973-1976, says the decision to fund the band now will hopefully encourage other former musicians and band parents to contribute.

“The LHS Band represents more than the high school in some respects; it represents our community,” Kitchell said. “It’s good to see the commitment students, parents and faculty to activities such as robotics and music. This is one time when we need the community to step up and prepare our young people to succeed at the next level.”

Reservations for the tournament may be made by contacting the Mayor’s Office at (574) 753-2551 or dkitchell@cityoflogansport.org. Greens fees are $50 per player and hole sponsorships are $100.
