Emergency personnel responded to several incidents Thursday, Aug. 29 in Cass County:

US 35 at 400 N

At approximately 5:38 a.m., Cass County Central Dispatch received a call of a single vehicle crash south of County Road 400 North on US 35. Deputy Ryan Preston and Deputy Nick Boyer responded to the crash, along with Cass County Fire District 1, Royal Center Fire and Prompt Ambulance. Initial assessment found a single vehicle travelled off the roadway and struck a tree.

Preliminary investigation by Deputy Nick Boyer found that Christopher Bundy, 52, of rural Twelve Mile, had been driving a 2018 four-door Jeep Renegade southbound on US 35 north when he drove off the east side of the roadway and struck a tree. Bundy had to be extricated from the vehicle. The investigating officer believes the safety equipment, seatbelt harness and airbags reduced the injuries to Bundy.

Lutheran Helicopter was requested at the scene by medical personnel to airlift Bundy.

The crash is still under investigation by the Cass County Sheriff’s Office. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 574-753-7800.

US 35 at 1000S

At approximately 1:09 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29, Cass County Central Dispatch was notified of a vehicle crash near County Road 1000 S on US 35. Several deputies from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, the Indiana State Police, the Galveston Police Department and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources responded to the scene. Units from Cass County Emergency Management, Galveston Fire, Walton Fire and Prompt Ambulance Service also responded to the crash. Initial scene assessment found a pickup truck and a semi-tractor trailer hauling anhydrous ammonia had collided and come to rest on the east side of US 35 in the ditch.

Preliminary investigation by Deputy Logan Frushour and Deputy David Wells found that John Radtke, 36, of Galveston, had been driving a 2005 Dodge Dakota southbound on US 35 when he drove left of center.

The pick-up truck was struck by a 2016 Western Star semi-tractor and cargo trailer loaded with anhydrous ammonia that was being driven northbound on US 35 by David Hensel of Walton.

Cass County Dispatch Telecommunications Operators were on the telephone with a citizen that had been following the Dodge Dakota driving left of center when the crash occurred.

Radtke was extricated from the vehicle by fire personnel and a Lutheran helicopter was requested at the scene to airlift him to a trauma center in Fort Wayne.

The cargo tank was not compromised and no anhydrous ammonia leaked. US 35 between Walton and Galveston was closed for approximately three hours for cleanup operations.

“We were very fortunate to not have a hazardous material leak as a result of this crash,” said Sheriff Ed Schroder.

The crash is still under investigation by the Cass County Sheriff’s Office. Anyone with information is asked to contact the office at 574-753-7800.

SR 18 at CR 700 E

At approximately 2:44 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29, Cass County Central Dispatch received a call of a two-vehicle crash on State Road 18 at County Road 700 East in Cass County. Sergeant Pat Zeider responded to the crash along with other emergency personnel that were at another crash scene on US 35 north of Galveston. The responding agencies included Galveston Fire and Police Departments, the Indiana State Police and Prompt Ambulance Service. Initial scene assessment found a car slowing down was rear-ended by another passenger vehicle.

Preliminary investigation by Sergeant Zeider found that Isaiah Elzeck, 18, of Galveston, was eastbound and did not observe a vehicle slowing in front of him and was unable to avoid striking the slowing vehicle, driven by Kyle Brambila, 33, of Logansport. Passengers in Brambila’s vehicle included Leslie Dewitt of Logansport as well as a five-year-old child and a two-and-a-half-month-old infant. Three of the occupants in Brambila’s vehicle were transported to Logansport Memorial Hospital complaining of pain.
