On Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2019 at approximately 10:19 a.m ., Cass County Central Dispatch was notified of a vehicle crash near County Road 875 North and State Road 25. Several deputies from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, the Indiana State Police and the Cass County Emergency Management Agency responded to the scene. Units from Harrison Township Fire, Twelve Mile Fire, Logansport Fire, Cass County Fire District #1 , Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office and Phoenix Ambulance Service also responded to the crash.

Initial scene assessment found a semi-tractor trailer loaded with diesel fuel had traveled off the roadway, struck a garage and propane tank and came to rest east of SR 25, south of CR 875 N.

Preliminary investigation by Deputy Brian Swartzell found that Robert Kingery, 57, of Peru, IN, had been driving a 2020 Kenworth semi-tractor with a 2016 Polar semi tanker trailer southbound on SR 25 when he drove off the east side of the roadway. The tractor trailer traveled approximately 500 feet through a cornfield, across CR 875 N and through an unoccupied garage at 4746 E CR 875 N. Kingery was able to exit the semi-tractor and transported to Logansport Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries by Phoenix Ambulance personnel.

The semi cargo tank was not compromised and no diesel fuel leaked from the tanker. State Road 25 between SR 16 and SR 114 was closed for approximately three hours as a safety precaution.

Before the McClure Oil transport vehicle traveled through the garage, it struck a propane tank on the property. The propane tank was pushed through the garage and came to rest near the neighboring residence. The propane tank leaked and caught fire, causing damage to the residence at 8742 N SR 25.
“We were very fortunate to not have a diesel fuel leak or propane explosion as a result of this crash. All of the emergency services worked well together to safely resolve a very dangerous and volatile situation,” said Sheriff Ed Schroder.

The crash is still under investigation by the Cass County Sheriff’s Office. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the office at 574-753-7800.
