An historic war memorial is the focus of negotiations to restore and re-open it at its home at Seventh and East Market streets.

Mayor Dave Kitchell announced today he has received a formal letter of interest from Rocky Shanehsaz, owner of The Mill Top in Noblesville, rated the state’s top wedding venue for several years. Shanehsaz, who approached the community about leasing the building nearly two years ago, is interested in refurbishing the ballroom and catering facilities at the Logansport/Cass County Memorial Center, making it available for various local events.

“This is a public acknowledgment of discussions we’ve had for more than a year. We think those discussions are reaching the critical stage and we hope to present a proposal to city and county officials this fall,” Kitchell said. “His track record in utilizing historic buildings in unique ways and is a successful one. I’m glad he has continued his interest in Logansport, Cass County and the center.”

Shanehsaz has indicated he wants to dedicate a portion of the building to World War I veterans who were honored with the construction of the center in 1922. In his later, he indicated a letter of intent may be forthcoming.

“I welcome further discussion to make this challenging but extremely rewarding project get off the ground, get moving and get completed,” Shanehsaz wrote.

Among the issues discussed have been access for the community’s existing caterers to use the center and securing an agreement that will ensure the center’s use and ensure that veteran groups will be given preference in reserving events there.
