An elementary art teacher and a former English teacher who was actively involved in academic coaching were recognized today.
Jane Williams of Landis Elementary and retired Logansport High School teacher Joe Weaver have been named the 2019 winners of the Margaret Newby Awards for Teaching. The awards were established in 2016 to recognize outstanding teachers based on community input from parents, colleagues, students and other local residents.
The award is named for Margaret Newby, a long-time Logansport teacher who spent most of her career at the former Longfellow Elementary School. She began teaching in 1925. She actively supported young adult literature reading and the summer reading program offered through the Logansport/Cass County Public Library. She also was the first woman to coach elementary sports and won city titles in three sports during World War II.
