A man who served Northern Heights residents in a voluntary capacity to ensure there would be safe drinking water for their residents is recognized this week with a special city honor.

Karl Myer, a retired Logansport firefighter, took an active role in securing utility extensions for the area at the northern edge of the city in the 1990s.

“Karl epitomizes the kind of citizen who recognizes a need and realizes they can contribute to the betterment of the community if they step up and work with those necessary to improve the lives of people around them,” Mayor Dave Kitchell said today in naming him the Citizen of the Week. “Karl was involved in various meetings with the residents affected, the utilities and state officials,” Kitchell said. “If not for his efforts, I’m not sure anyone would have done what he did to secure utilities for areas outside the city limits where septic systems were failing and lots were not large enough for new systems. Cities such as Flint, Mich., have well-publicized problems with drinking water, but they didn’t have a Karl Myer. We’re fortunate to have him.”

Myer will receive a certificate from the Mayor’s Office and a $20 gift certificate to a local restaurant.

The Citizen of the Week is sponsored by the Mayor’s Office. The program recognizes current or former residents for their contributions.
