Logansport, IN – About 30 people attended a meeting held by the Cass County Commissioners on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2019, to learn more about the project to renovate and expand the Cass County Jail.

The project will add a 47,000 square foot addition to the existing 49,000 square foot jail, and will include the renovation of 3,000 square feet of existing space.

The two-story addition will allow for an additional 154 beds, bringing the total number of beds to 362, with an operating bed count of 289 beds, or 80 percent.

The project has a total cost of $23,535,000.

The county plans to finance $18,535,000 over a period of 20 years.

Financial advisors for the county said they anticipate that the .2 percent correctional facility income tax rate adopted last year will cover the entire repayment, which is expected to be about $1,375,000 annually over the next 20 years.

The bonds are expected to be finalized in January and construction would start in the spring and take about 18 months.

The Cass County Commissioners will hold a public hearing on the lease bond for the jail expansion project at their meeting on Monday, Nov. 18 at 9 a.m.

Also on the agenda for the meeting are bid recommendations for the jail addition project and Ordinance 2019-12, establishing inmate intake fee.
