On Sunday, February 2, 2020, at approximately 2:02 a.m., Cass County Central Dispatch received a call of a single vehicle crash north of Lockport Rd. on Georgetown Road. Reserve Deputy Gary Baumgardner, Deputy Chris Jones and Sergeant Brad Craven responded to the crash along with Georgetown Fire Department, Cass County Fire District and Phoenix Ambulance Service.

Initial scene assessment found a single vehicle had rolled over, ejecting the driver and coming to rest on the east side of the roadway.Preliminary investigation by Deputy Chris Jones found that 19-year-old August Leon Hayden of rural Logansport, IN, had been driving a 2003 blue Chevrolet pickup westbound on Georgetown Road when he drove off the westside of the roadway, overcorrected and rolled approximately 2 times and came to rest on the east side of the roadway. Hayden was ejected from the vehicle and was unresponsive when emergency crews arrived. Samaritan Helicopter was requested to land at the scene of the crash. Hayden was airlifted from the scene to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis where he was listed in critical condition as of 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

The investigating officer believes Hayden was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. It is believed that the use of seatbelt would have reduced the injuries to Hayden. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in this crash.

The crash is still under investigation by the Cass County Sheriff’s Office. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 574-753-7800.
